This article is aimed at teaching you to take better advantage of all the
wonderful fonts available out there on the internet. As a fellow scrapbooker, I
am sure you are well aware of the advantages that nice, favorable fonts have to
offer your scrapbook.
The first item on the agenda is to create a folder in your computer that is easy
for you to find where you can save your fonts. For people who are not very
familiar with computers, I recommend that you place it in a very simple place to
find such as DESKTOP. Your DESKTOP is the area that you first view whenever you
turn your computer on.
To create a new folder, right click in any open area and click NEW and then
FOLDER. Then Right click on the icon that appears which is titled NEW FOLDER and
click RENAME.
Then type in NEW FONTS.
Your new folder has been created.
Now it is time to move on to the second stage. Finding fonts for download. You
can purchase fonts online or by ordering them on a CD, but my suggestion to you
is to take advantage of the free resources available on the internet that allow
you to download ‘freeware’ or fonts for free.
One of my very favorite sites such as this is
www.acidfonts.com <http://www.acidfonts.com> . There, at that site, they
have one of the largest collections of free font downloads that I have ever
seen.
Once you have chosen a resource from which to get your new fonts, it is time to
browse and search for fonts that have specific appeal to you. Take care not to
download anything and everything and go a little ‘font happy’ just because they
are free. Remember that there are literally thousands of free fonts available
for download, so you have the advantage of being a bit choosey.
Once you find a font, you will notice a link that says download here, WINDOWS or
MAC…I am working from a Windows based operating system, so I choose WINDOWS.
After clicking the WINDOWS button, a screen should pop up, asking you if you
want to open or save the file, select SAVE. Then, in the SAVE IN space at the
top of the window, navigate your way to DESKTOP and then to the NEW FONTS folder
which you created earlier. Then, just click SAVE. Your font should now be
located in the NEW FONTS folder as a .zip file type.
In order to open and install this font, you will have to have a .zip file opener
such as WINZIP. If you do not have it, you can download a free trial version at
www.winzip.com <http://www.winzip.com> . Once you have the software, all you
must do to open and install the font is double click on it or click once and hit
OPEN. WinZip’s utility should then appear, and offer you the choice to BUY NOW,
to ENTER REGISTRATION CODE, or to USE TRIAL VERSION. We will select USE TRIAL
VERSION.
It will then ask if you want to open the file and you should click NEXT. When
the file has been opened, then you will see a folder or file with the name by
the font you downloaded. A great way to identify the font file is by right
clicking on it and click PROPERTIES. A font file’s name will end in .TTF.
Once you have found this file, simply right click it and select COPY. Then, go
to your START button located at the bottom right of your Window’s navigation bar
then choose SETTINGS and then CONTROL PANEL.
A window will now open, look for the file named FONTS and open it. Now right
click, and hit PASTE----and walla---your new font has been installed.
Congratulations!!!
