One of the most difficult and time-consuming aspects of scrapbooking is laying out your photos and preparing your page structure.

Yes, there is such a thing as too many photos. Why not spread your photos out?

You will certainly enjoy them more this way and you’re not in a rush to get things done, so take your time and separate some of those cluttered layouts into several, neater, better organized pages where you can place emphasis on the pictures and really tell their story.

The question of how many photos should be used on a page should be answered by how much room your page allows for pictures inside the theme that you have chosen for it.

You should not try to preset the number of pictures that you plan to fit on each page, doing this leads to a monotonous tone throughout the book without much difference between layouts.

The more that your layout varies, the more flavor and style you can interject between photos.

One concern when deciding upon how many pictures to include in a certain layout is that you leave room for highlights and embellishments throughout your scrapbook.

You may also choose to include items such as captions below some or even all of your pictures.

Planning what to use where is absolutely critical at this stage.

Once you have begun pasting the items into your layout, the time to make last minute changes has already passed.

If you see on your trial layout (before you paste anything) that the page looks stuffy or overcrowded, just remove one of the photos.

If that doesn’t solve it, then keep removing them until you are satisfied with the results.

It is all right to use multiple pictures inside a layout?

Of course! I suggest that you use one larger picture as a focal point on these layouts and then accent the larger picture with smaller ones in a neat line or spaced proportionately around the other photo.

By placing the photos in a relative order, you prevent getting that overcrowded feel to your page.

Okay, I have okayed using multiple photos on a page, now what if you want to use none!!! This is fine also.

Be sure that the items that you choose to place on this page are of great enough size and importance to make up for the relative value of the photos that you did not include.

This type of a layout is ideal for an important keepsake such as an invitation or announcement.

Be sure to use embellishments to dazzle up the appearance of your memorabilia after you have placed it into the layout.

In the end, where you put your photos and how many you use is up to you. You’ll find that each layout calls for a different design, and each photo requires a different approach.

The best advice I can give is to trust your instincts: if the page looks too crowded or bare, make a few adjustments, step away from the page and see what it looks like a few minutes later.

No matter what your theme or basic layout of your scrapbook is, these tips that I have shared with you are truly universal to any type of scrapbook application.

Use them wisely, and you will not be disappointed.

However, there is always an exception to every rule so if you feel that you absolutely must ignore a rule and lay it out in your own way, go for it!
