Scrapbooking is a really fun and enjoyable way to protect photos--and enjoy them at the same time.

Taking the time to organize photos well makes your scrapbooking experience so much easier and enjoyable.

To begin with, you might want to organize your photos into smaller groups of similar periods of photographs, which will help prevent the task from becoming too overwhelming.

Once this step is complete, and it is time to begin the actual organization, start organizing with these suggestions in mind:

The first step would be to locate all of your photos into one collection. This process may take a bit more time then you would think.

Many people, although they try to keep their photos in one place, often have photographs stored in various places in and around their home.

Take the extra time to look thoroughly in old drawers and cabinets or even in the attic or other places that might possibly contain small pieces of important memories and events.

Once you have assembled all of your photos, it is time to begin the process of organizing large groups by sorting them into chronological order and then smaller ones by theme-orientated events.

For example, you might have several different sets of Christmas photographs from different years so begin by sorting them according to date with the other photos and then separate them by theme (Christmas).

One tip you will find extraordinarily helpful while doing this is that if you pay special attention to detail such as clothes and picture background, you will find this task goes by much quicker.

Use a soft-tipped, fast-drying pen or soft leaded pencil to label the backs of the photos.

If you have an excessive amount of photographs, then a year number on the back of each photo will be very helpful when separating them. (Never use ballpoint pens to do this because they tend to emboss the other side of the photo with the writing.)

Your photos are the makeup and main composition of your entire scrapbook. Almost all of your choices pertaining to your scrapbook relate back to the composition of your photographs.

Photo organization plays a vital role in scrapbooking.

The ability to find and use all of your photos in a planned, organized manner will result in a scrapbook that reflects your planning and extra attention.

It is wise to make duplicates of your photographs before you ever even begin the scrapbooking process. There are a number of ways to do this.

You can make them yourself if you have a little patience, a digital scanner, and a printer with the proper media to print it onto. This method has its advantages.

Since you are already converting the images into a digital format, you can save all of your photos on a cd and place that cd in a safe place just for backup measures.

If this method is too time consuming for you, then you might consider having index prints of your photos made for safekeeping instead.

An index print comes with a thumbnail of each shot on a roll. It also comes with the new processed film.

Even if you do not intend on scrapbooking, it is still an excellent idea to store your negatives in a safe place. Many things can happen to them such as fires, floods, or other natural disasters that can cause them significant damage.

If you have placed your negatives or duplicates into a safe place such as a safety deposit box you do not have to worry.

Many times, after such disasters, people are most heartbroken over the loss of these types of items.

Always take precautionary measures and be sure your pictures are safe.

Better safe then sorry.
