The creative possibilities for making a scrapbook for the preservation of
memories are endless. Kids tote home literally dozens of papers in their
backpacks that parents cannot bear to discard. Are you running out of storage
room? Why not place them into a scrapbook for storage and safekeeping? They are
really quite enjoyable to create and plus they offer you a great way to involve
your children in the scrapbooking process.
Remember, when it comes to scrapbooking, creativity is the key to success. All
you will need are a sharp pair of scissors, card stock (paper), a binder,
something to write with, and a picture safe adhesive. Other items that could be
useful would be supplies such as crafting scissors, page protectors, stickers,
etc.
Begin by taking your binding choice (perhaps a three-ring notebook). Next,
decorate it according to your style and flavor of content. Then, find ways to
add small accessories such as stickers, ribbon, lace, dried flowers-whatever
strikes your fancy.
If your child is already in school, make sure to preserve any items you include
such as certificates, tests, special artwork, ect. by laminating them before you
place them into your scrapbook. You can opt to either laminate them onto
backings such as construction paper or matte board, or just by themselves.
Either way, the lamination offers the papers a good bit of protection.
Pictures are also a wonderful addition to a children’s scrapbook. If you do not
want to laminate the awards and place them directly into the book, you might
consider taking a photo of your child holding that award instead. You can then
crop or decoratively cut the picture in any way you would like. Then, you may
want to consider a matt to place behind your photos, in order to compliment them
as well as contrast them and bring more attention to them on that page. Consider
even perhaps having the child (if he or she is old enough) to write captions or
titles on the page.
Another terrific addition would be to add a group of related signatures to a
picture. If you choose to do this, be sure not to use your original. A great way
to do so is if your child is part of a team such as a ball team-you can have him
or her carry a copy of the photograph to school and having their friends sign
it.
Pocket pages or brag books are a really fun and simple way to create a
‘portable’ scrapbook to share on the go with friends and family. For use as a
cover, cut a piece of poster board or matte board the same size as the cover and
paste the bottoms and sides of the first and last pages into them. Next, do any
decorating necessary and finally, paste your photos and content into the pages
themselves. These not only make great mini-scrapbooks for you but they also make
wonderful gifts for family such as proud grandparents. Good luck, and I hope
this article give you some great ideas on how to get started with a simple
layout involving your children.
